Pepsiwaala Holidays

As soon as I hear the word "Summer Holidays", it creates an immense joy. Those memories form an important part of childhood days. These WFH days directly transported me to my childhood, the period of annual vacation, for which, we would wait for an entire academic year. It was worth the wait. By the time, results are declared, our packing would have also been reached its optimum. We would be so looking forward to the exciting days ahead of us. I have spent my summer holidays in a town called Bijapur, the northern part of Karnataka, famous for mosques and extreme temperatures. I don’t think, I can bear that heat now, but those days, no burning feet, no sweat, no power cut would prevent us from enjoying. Now, these are major issues and we would turn the world upside down. Life was simple back then.

Our everyday schedule consisted of only two things - eating and playing. Days during summer are generally longer, but we ensured that our day was long enough to play, eat, go to market with ajji, go to the bank with ajja come back thirsty and gulp loads of homemade lemon juice or buttermilk, kulfi, jamun (the fruit) and one special item that has etched my mind is eating Pepsi and not drinking it. Yes, we are talking about the frozen ice-cold treat ‘Pepsi’ which came in a transparent tube pouch, filled with many colorful flavored drinks - Red, Yellow, green, violet, blue, Orange. It needed to be kept cold/ frozen. We can relate it to a thinner version of ice golas. Most of us would have relished it then and still long to eat it now.

Our only intervals used to be for quenching our thirst. Meals used to be the least of our priority. The pampering by ajji, and disturbing ajja – we were so fond of troubling him - be it his sleep timings, be it misplacing his accessories and pestering him to buy us pepsi. I would do anything to go back to relive those moments again. We lived for the moment, probably that’s why childhood is everyone’s most cherished phase of life. I wish we could freeze our timeline at the very moment and never grow up.
